The Clash of Gods: A Reinterpretation of Early Christian Art
by: Thomas F. Mathews
Between the third and sixth centuries, the ancient gods, goddesses, and heroes who had populated the imagination of humankind for a millennium were replaced by a new imagery of Christ and his saints. Thomas Mathews explores the many different, often surprising, artistic images and religious interpretations of Christ during this period. He challenges the accepted theory of the "Emperor Mystique," which, interpreting Christ as king, derives the vocabulary of Christian art from the propagandistic imagery of the Roman emperor.

Christian Art: A Very Short Introduction
by: Beth Williamson
This Very Short Introduction decodes the key themes, signs, and symbols found in Christian art: the Eucharist, the image of the Crucifixion, the Virgin Mary, the Saints, Old and New Testament narrative imagery, and iconography. It also explores the theological and historical background of Christian imagery, from the devotional works of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, to the twenty-first century.
Williamson uses examples from, amongst others, Cimabue, Michelangelo, and Rosetti. She concludes by outlining the co-existence in contemporary 'post-Christian' culture of the deliberately controversial works of artists such as Andres Serrano and Chris Ofili, alongside the consciously devotional works of those such as Eric Gill and Peter Blake.

Imperial Rome and Christian Triumph: The Art of the Roman Empire AD 100-450
by: Ja's Elsner
This stimulating book offers an exciting new approach to the twin themes of the arts of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christian art. Beginning in the second century, with its rich revival of ancient learning and artistic practices, and ending in the fifth with Christian narrative and liturgical cycles and the pilgrimage arts, this book explores the art of the Roman Empire by tackling two inter-related periods of internal transformation: the 'Second Sophist' (c. ad 100-300), and the era of late antiquity (.

Among the most famous of these catacombs are the catacombs of Domatilla, San Callisto, and Sts. Marcellinus and Peter. Other early examples of Roman Christian art can be found in Roman sarcophagi, several of which are now housed in the Vatican. Early Christian churches in Rome and Ravenna, most dating from the 5th century AD, show the beginnings of Byzantine style artwork. Manuscripts of the Christian Bible were also beginning to be produced in this period. Much more detailed information about Early Christian Art can be found in the websites referenced at the end of this video.
